Where does musk in perfume come from?

Originally, musk was an animal-derived material produced by a small mammal from Asia. This substance releases a powerful, animalic scent that is surprisingly addictive. Renowned for its rarity and fixative properties, musk has long been a prized ingredient among perfumers. 

Harvested at the expense of the animal, natural musk was eventually banned. Yet perfumery could not give up its musky fragrances, so over the years it developed alternatives able to recreate their olfactory profile, as with amber fragrance and marine fragrance. 

Musky fragrances: the caress of white musk

Synthetic musk, also known as white musk, is now widely used in perfume. They stand out for their soft trail, reminiscent of fresh linen, clean skin or a baby’s scent. Here, musk moves away from its animalic facet to reveal an immaculate, delicate and powdery version. A modern interpretation of musk, cherished for its elegance and the way it becomes one with the skin. 

Unexpectedly, musky notes can also be found in certain plants. Derived from plants such as ambrette, vegetal musks reveal a lighter yet equally enveloping expression of musk.
