A marine fragrance, also known as a salty or aquatic perfume, is a fragrance designed to recreate the scent of the coast. 

Depending on its notes, a marine fragrance can evoke different facets of the shoreline: some marine perfumes recall the sun-drenched beaches of the Mediterranean, summer holidays and the scent of sun cream. Others bring to mind wilder landscapes, with ocean, seaweed, salt and rocks. 

Both soothing and invigorating, marine fragrances recreate the sensations of a walk by the sea. Their greatest asset? An immediate freshness, together with a sense of escape and serenity that unfolds from the first notes. 

How Calone revolutionised marine fragrances

Unlike rose, orange blossom, jasmine or vanilla, the scent of a sea breeze cannot be obtained through extraction. To recreate these distinctive aquatic notes, perfumers must work with olfactory accords that imitate the scent of sea salt. 

The marine perfume family is relatively recent. Its story began in a laboratory with the accidental discovery of Calone, a synthetic molecule whose scent perfectly evokes sea air. The advantage of Calone is that only a small amount is enough to bring beautiful aquatic fresh and subtle green notes to a perfume.

Calone often appears alongside woody and musky base notes, an accord well known to perfumers for enhancing the longevity and staying power of marine fragrances on the skin. Its aquatic facets pair beautifully with floral fragrances and citrus notes. More surprisingly, combining Calone and patchouli in a perfume creates a beautifully fresh and sensual contrast. 

Aquatic fragrance by Réminiscence
